Teaching

Wendy has taught the cello for over 20 years to students of all ages and levels, from the young beginner to college music majors. Her emphasis is on a strong technical foundation while developing a student’s love for classical music. However, it is not unusual for Wendy to incorporate the latest pop songs into a student’s repertoire, especially when it can highlight a specific technique that is being taught. Wendy follows the leveled certificates of the Music Teacher’s Association’s Certificate of Merit Program (CM). At the end of each level, students are awarded a certificate (whether they participate in CM or not). Please visit www.mtac.org for additional information on CM. Wendy also uses a practice incentive program which rewards consistent and effective practice.

  2. Since it is not always possible to for-see and avoid every schedule conflict, students will be allowed 2 “sick days” per year where he or she can cancel by 9:00 on the morning of the lesson and still receive a make-up lesson. Make-up lessons that cannot be rescheduled in the same week will be made up in December or July. Accommodations can also be made for family vacations with at least 2 weeks notice.

Testimonials

“Wendy has the gift of inspiration. She brings out the best in young people.

In comparison to other teachers we have worked with, her lessons are planned, well thought out, and clearly have a progression. Blending lessons on music theory with drills and well known musical works kept my son interested, and he could see his own progress over time, helping give him internal motivation.

After more than 3 years, my teenaged son still comes back from lessons with Wendy upbeat, excited to show me what he has learned, and eager to practice.”

“Wendy has shown our son the fundamentals of playing cello in a way that encourages his excitement and creativity. As a result of her influence, he has shown a willingness to work very hard to accomplish his goals.

Her wonderful intuition for identifying the best learning style for our son has allowed him to grow musically at a much faster pace than we ever expected.

Wendy is so positive and energetic, and it makes him really excited to come work with her each week. It’s amazing how she is teaching him to think about his playing so that he himself can learn to recognize his own errors in playing or pitch.

Our experience with Wendy has given our son confidence, wonderful technical improvement, and sense of joy and fun while playing. We recommend her very highly as a teacher.”
